During an EEG, a special net is placed on your head to measure the electrical activity of your brain cells. The very weak currents are picked up and amplified by the device. Please note that no electricity flows into your head; rather, the device only measures the signals that are already present. Of course, we cannot read minds with it.
What examinations do we perform?
EMG – Electromyography
We only perform this examination if it is required from a neurological perspective. The functions of muscle and nerve cells are checked using a thin needle electrode. Since the needle is inserted into the muscle, some people find this unpleasant. Unfortunately, we cannot perform this examination on patients with coagulation disorders or those undergoing treatment with blood-thinning medication.
ENG – Electroneurography
Electroneurography measures nerve conduction velocity (NCV) in the arms or legs. This helps determine whether your peripheral nerves are functioning properly. Our staff will, of course, explain the procedure to you in advance.
Evoked potentials
The nerve conduction in the nervous system is measured using magnetic or electrical stimuli. This allows us to check how signals are transmitted from the arm or leg to the brain (somatosensory evoked potentials, SEP), from the inner ear to the balance center (auditory evoked potentials, FAEP), or from the retina to the visual center (visually evoked potentials, VEP).
Doppler and duplex sonography of the brain-supplying vessels
Using Doppler or color duplex sonography, we examine the blood flow in the arteries that supply the brain with blood. This method is risk-free for you and generates both an acoustic and an optical representation of the blood flow.
Neuro-ultrasound
The term neuro-ultrasound encompasses various ultrasound examinations of the nerves and brain. A transcranial ultrasound examination, for example, allows a more precise assessment of the brainstem if Parkinson’s disease is suspected. In the case of entrapment syndromes (e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome), nerve adhesions or tumors, ultrasound examination of the peripheral nerves can provide important information.
Cognitive testing
In cases of memory, orientation, or cognitive impairment, or if dementia is suspected, we use testing methods such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Clock Drawing Test, or DemTect. This helps us determine the severity of the impairments and assess the progression.
Lumbar Puncture (CSF Tap)
During a lumbar puncture, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is collected to help diagnose certain conditions such as multiple sclerosis or Alzheimer’s disease more accurately. We will, of course, provide you with detailed information about the procedure and possible risks in a personal informed-consent consultation.
