Electroneurography measures nerve conduction velocity (NCV) in the arms or legs. This helps determine whether your peripheral nerves are functioning properly. Our staff will, of course, explain the procedure to you in advance.
Electroneurography (ENG)
Description of the examination
Electroneurography, also known as ENG, is a method for measuring nerve conduction velocity (NCV). Electrodes are attached to the patient’s skin, through which small electrical impulses are sent. Then, it is measured how quickly these impulses are transmitted along the nerves. In this way, functional disorders of the peripheral nerves can be detected and quantified.
During the examination, you lie or sit comfortably so that the affected nerves – often in the arms or legs – are easily accessible. The close-meshed documentation of the conductivity supports a precise diagnosis. Based on the measurement results, the neurology specialist assesses whether, for example, polyneuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, or another form of nerve damage is present.
When is this examination necessary?
An electroneurography is ordered if a disorder of the peripheral nerves is suspected. Typical symptoms can be numbness, tingling, pain, or muscle weakness. Even if chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, which can often cause peripheral neuropathy, are suspected, ENG is an important component of diagnostics.
In addition, this examination is used to clarify unclear paralysis or chronic complaints. The data obtained provide essential clues for subsequent therapy planning or further neurodiagnostic steps.
Is this examination painful or uncomfortable?
ENG is well tolerated by most people and does not cause lasting pain. The emitted electrical impulses are often perceived as a slight tingling or brief “twitching.” Some people find this unusual, but this feeling subsides immediately after the measurements are completed.
Since no needles are used and the examination only takes place on the skin surface, the risk of complications is low. Your treatment team will explain the procedure to you step by step so that you can optimally prepare for the examination.
