Cognitive testing

In cases of memory, orientation, or cognitive impairment, or if dementia is suspected, we use testing methods such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Clock Drawing Test, or DemTect. This helps us determine the severity of the impairments and assess the progression.

Cognitive testing

Description of the examination

In cognitive testing, specific tests are used to assess your cognitive abilities, memory performance, and concentration skills. Typical procedures include the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Clock Drawing Test, or DemTect. These tests consist of simple tasks, such as repeating words, drawing a clock, or recognizing images.

The individual test sections are designed to cover different areas of your cognitive abilities. These include verbal fluency, spatial reasoning, memory and recall, and concentration. This allows us to specifically analyze whether and in which areas a cognitive impairment exists.

When is this examination necessary?

Cognitive testing is useful if dementia, such as Alzheimer’s or frontotemporal dementia, is suspected. Even in cases of brain injuries, strokes, or other neurological disorders, such an examination can provide information about the extent of memory and concentration disorders.

In addition, cognitive testing serves to monitor the course of the condition. This means that if there is a pre-existing condition, regular checks are carried out to determine whether cognitive abilities are changing. This allows early intervention and adjustment of therapy.

Is this examination painful or uncomfortable?

Cognitive testing is non-invasive, meaning it is performed without physical intervention. Therefore, it is neither painful nor unpleasant. Some tasks may seem challenging, which leads to slight nervousness in some patients.

However, the examinations are designed to take place in a quiet atmosphere. Breaks are available if needed, and the examination can be carried out in small steps to keep stress to a minimum.
